Since we've never been to these places, some tips on things to do & places to see would be very appreciated. Also, suggestions for what to pack for this time of year (end of Oct. - beginning of Nov.) would be helpful.
BTW - ever notice how people say "back east" & "out west?"

Hi Lee! Love NYC and Boston - hope you have a grand birthday celebration. A recent Slow Travel Talk thread on "Recommendations for New York City" will be helpful, I think. http://slowtalk.com/groupee/forums/a/tpc/f/906600885/m/738103743 You could start a thread with the same request for Boston! Safe travels.
One my personal fav things in NYC is riding the Staten Island Ferry. I just ride it out and back. The view coming back into to lower Manhattan is incredible.
I've done a walking tour through Central Park that was incredible. Love, love, love the Met. There is just so much to see there. Never enough time. Chopped liver sandwich at the Ben Ash deli (across from Carnegie). I love walking throut Zabar's in the UWS. I've never been to the Cloisters, but it always looked cool. Love Grand Central Station. Love the subways. I just loved wandering through Central Park. The Natural History museum was cool, as was the Lower East Side Tenement Museum. Oh, dear. I could go on and on. Obviously....if you have any questions.....
Oh how fun! You'll love it! Pack layers....and look at the weather forecast a couple days before you go to see if you'll need a heavy jacket. COMFY but stylish shoes are a must. (no sneakers unless you do not mind looking like a tourist...) The fall colors will be pretty....it will be perfect weather, I bet. See a show in NY if at all possible...start scouting them out now.
I don't know when you're leaving. I love NYC. Ditto Roxie on the Cloisters. I have heard they are wonderful to visit. I've been to NYC three times and stayed at different places each time and had a blast. I got to go into the towers prior to 9/11 and have pictures. I forced myself to go up there. I am afraid of heights (somewhat) though I knew the chances of me getting to go back were about zilch at the time.
The big church near Columbia is wonderful. In fact, I took one of those bus tours because of the limited time I had. It was worth the money. Got to see a lot in a short time.
Hey, thanks everyone for the tips. Any specifics on comfy, yet stylish shoes?
