birthday blues

Last year around this time, I overdid it on the elliptical machine at my daughter's gym and came home with bursitis in my right hip. This year, we spent some time at my sister's beach condo to celebrate my birthday. I went with my sister to a couple exercise classes. Something I did in the second one (gyro-something) has made my back very sore. How do you deal with a back strain? When should I get back to bicycling? Will walking help or hinder my back's healing?

First of all, Happy Birthday! I believe we are both close in date and age (me, 11/2-54).

How long has your back been hurting? If it is just a day or so, rest, ice, maybe some advil or aleve should help. That means skipping the walking for a day or so and just resting.

If it's been longer than a day or so, but feels like it is improving, you can still ice, etc. but some walking should be fine, unless you find it makes it feel worse.

Other than that, gentle stretching, knees to chest, supine twist (lay on your back, knees bent and let them fall to one side then the other), should make your back feel better.

(getting old kind of sucks, huh?)

Hey Debbie - Happy birthday! Mine is 11/2-59.

Thanks for the advice. I wish I would have iced it when it first hurt. I've been getting some relief from a lot of advil and a heating pad. I'll definitely try the gentle stretching you suggest.

(getting older is something else -- not for wimps that's for sure)

Happy birthday!

What I do for back pain is get to my masseuse as soon as I can, if it's really bad then it's the chiropractor and if neither is available what has helped me in the past is a hot bath with... get this... vinegar in the water. I don't know what it is about the vinegar but it sure helps. I put about 2c in a tub, and shower before I get rid of the smell of the vinegar.

I hope your back feels better soon. And you're right, aging is not for wimps by no means! :-)

Sorry I missed your birthday, but hope it was great... aside from nursing injuries.

So much advice out there about back pain! I know short term, I learned not to be sparing with the anti-inflammatories. I tried to be stoic the first time I had a back injury & it didn't get better until I got the swelling under control. But everyone's different and its a HUGE topic. Good luck and hope you feel better soon!

Sorry to hear about your back. Belated happy birthday. I came by from Cammy's blog. I laughed about the bike shorts because I found that I actually prefer the lower ones - they dig into my belly less:)

Hi there thanks for your advice and i think now backpain is not happen in old age but younger people have backpain too. For me, acupuncture is my favourite to deal with my backpain.

Really sorry to hear about your pain.

Start off with a little bit of stretching, specially in the lower back region. Then work on strengthening the back...should work well.

I think its a good idea for you to wear a brace whenever you are doing your exercises. You'll need that extra support to assist your joints and tendons. I also think its a good idea to see your dr. and ask what he/she feels would be the most appropriate time for you to get back to exercise, sometimes resting can be hard but might be better in the long run for your recovery. Hope it gets better soon. Let me know!

Walking is a dangerous thing to do with a sore back or a healthy back. I'm way against exercising and I have the body to prove it. I even wrote a book about it: How to Lose Weight Through Hibernation

Happy b-day, belated, haha. Still though, hope you had a good day. Anyways back pain is a common problem in my clinic. The best way to go about treating something like this is first addressing the root cause. It may be something different than you orginally thought. Even the arch support in your shoes can have an effect on your back. It's best to see your doctor and have them give you an opinion. There are also many other core exercise to help support your back. Anywho, cool blog, I hope you get better!
