Hollyweird's double standard - getting worse or better?

Basically, it's now ok if leading men have double chins and extra belly meat, but leading female actors still have to conform to ridiculously low weight requirements. For the life of me, I cannot understand why Seth Rogen has an acting career in the first place, but that he's now getting lead roles is just appalling. I'm not only referring to his unattractiveness, but the loathsome type of testosteroid characters he always "plays."

Why is our society now accepting of larger men and formerly chiseled men becoming softer with age in leading roles while continuing to demand anorexia and plastic surgery for women?

Here are a couple links that address this issue:

What’s the Skinny on the Heftier Stars? (NYT)

Scarlett Johansson takes on Hollywood (Guardian)

When was the last time you watched a film with actresses who were attractive and at so-called normal weights? I saw an amazing performance by Kristen Scott Thomas in "I've Loved You So long." It was fantastic to see such an interesting role about a woman in her forties. Too bad Scott Thomas portrayed the character as a model-thin chain smoker. Would she have been less interesting if she looked like she ate real food?

I have to agree that Hollywood is playing into an almost pornographic mentality (and I say that only because of what people like Ron Jeremy talk of why he was such a big star) of that possibility of beautiful women hooking up with and being interested in fat/balding/unattractive men.

Amazing how we're always supposed to look past the physical on men, but with women, it seems to not play out the same.

People like Charlize Theron, Renee Zellweger, and Toni Collete who gained weight for roles, and although applauded in their "larger" roles, were on the watch to see how fast and how much they would lose afterwards.

It just disgusts me.

I live in southern CA so I definitely see this everywhere including Hollywood! Even the cable news programs. Jeez, the women have to be hot but who cares what the guys look like. Same with women sports casters & the weather ladies they now have with boobs as big as a house! I realize that this is an over generalization but it is more the norm than not for sure!

Look at Susan Boyle of England.. all they could say before she opened her mouth & even now was how ugly she was but I doubt this will change anything. People think & talk about how bad that is but the movies & TV shows still look for beauty.

I am a bit bitter. I have tried to be a reader model in some of the mags I read for a while now.. especially since I am fit for my age but I think the fact that the camera "does not love me" has held me back. I thought reader models were supposed to be about fitness, not beauty! Ah, ain't it grand!

I don't even know who Seth Rogen is, but I already don't like him! :-)

cher - wow, you've given an interesting perspective on what's underlying this idiocy...seems to make sense.

Jody - So true & so infuriating. How many middle aged women do you see on any of the cable news shows anymore. There just seems to be an unending rotation of beauty queen teleprompter readers...who needs experienced journalists? I guess Katie Couric is the token one, doesn't seem like anyone is rising behind her, does it?

Patty - thanks for the belly laugh!

I know Seth Rogan and you are no Seth Rogan.
No, seriously they (whomever they are) must choose fat, chubby, chunky, multi-chinned men to act in movies because the people in charge (the choosers) are fat, chubby, chunky, multi-chinned men. I think they try to appeal to that drunk & stoned demographic- young folks in their preteens to teens to quasi-adult, drinking, goofing off. They do a lot of marketing. They have their reasons. Ones of which we will never understand.
Seth Rogan's multiple chins are more firm than my empty chins. Maybe it will do an exercise video to show us how he does it.
Off to Yreka this morning (don't ask why).

POD - If I can't ask why you're going to Yreka today, can I ask what you're going to do once you get there?

BTW - your post about the restaurant in Pacific Grove makes me want to go there...like now. Right now.

I'll take it a step further and say that I don't think it's only in Hollywood that this double standard is true, I think it's everywhere!! Think about it. It's always ok for men to get older, gain weight, go gray, etc. but if a woman ages gracefully or gains a few pounds, people say she's "letting herself go".

I agree with you 100%! It is totally unrealistic the expectations they have for women in Hollywood. I made a joke awhile back that I wanted to be "Fat Jessica Simpson." That meant 135 pounds. Where else is that considered fat? And remember how they gave Kate Winslet such flak for being "fat"? On what planet????? Urgh.
