MizFit has a great post today about
National Start! Walking Day. Best things about walking every day: you don't have to sign up and pay a fee before you can get started; you don't have to buy certain trendy and expensive clothing; you don't have to wait for a start time or make a reservation; you can do this alone and think your deep thoughts or walk with a friend or friends. And walking is something you can do your entire life! The only thing you really need to have is a decent or even good pair of walking shoes.
Currently, I'm using a pair of Ryka walking shoes. Sadly, they're pretty broken down as I've had them for more than a year now. Anyhoo, I like them. I used to use Asics running shoes for walking but the last pair I used never seemed to fit correctly.
Here's the participation segment of this post...I want to know what kind of shoes you recommend for walking. Do you use inserts? Also, are you going to get out and walk tomorrow?

If you are going to be serious about walking for a form of exercise then I would go to a reputable store & get fitted for the right walking shoe for you OR there are online sites that help too but nothing is like trying them on & walking in them.
If you have bad feet like me, it is really important to get the right shoe. I have very flat, wide & broken down feet so not only do I have to try them on every time I but as my feet keep changing (how fun, NOT!) but I also wear inserts to help with my flat & overpronating feet. It is also important to replace them after so many miles... don't wear them for years & years.
It makes a HUGE difference if you are wearing the right shoe for the kind of exercise you do.
I am a jogger more than anything else even though I use a couple other machines at the gym for cross training purposes & I do some hill walking on the treadmill too. But since jogging is more than the others, I buy jogging shoes but use them when I cross train. It seems to be OK for me.
When & if the time comes that I do more walking then I will invest in a specific walking shoe. Wish I could afford a couple pair of shoes as it is right now!
Good luck & you have to do things that you enjoy to keep at it long term. Just keep challenging yourself so your body does not stagnate.
PS: Try on a few different pairs & definitely walk in them. Feeling the difference between them will help you decide what feels best width, support, arch comfort wise. Sometimes I try on 5-6 pair because I have so many probs with my feet. I go to Road Runner Sports in my area & they have treadmills I can test the shoes out on since I am more a treadmill workout person than outside.workout person than outside.
Jody is right with her points. I do have two different shoes because of foot problems. For walking a pair of Merrell and a special pair of New Balance. If you do a lot of work in them you should watch for wear inside and out over time. My foot doctor pointed that out. In the past I'd tried inserts and the foot doctor made a pair but neither work for me. FInding the right shoe helped more.
Jody - Yep, my left foot has arch issues. My sister mentioned that she used a treadmill in the store she bought her running shoes in last time. I'll have to look for that type of store in my area. Thanks for the great tips!
Getting Healthy - (sorry I don't know your real name) Ah, yes! I remember your really cute Merrells. Thanks for your tips -- it is important to find the right shoes.
I walk to and from the bus stop to get to work every day. It is about a mile each way. Because I have to wear the same shoes all day, I do not have special walking shoes, but I do spend a little extra to make sure my shoes are comfortable.
I used to have foot problems, but they cleared up when I started wearing heel cups.
For cute, comfortable shoes I like Cole Haan's collection that uses Nike Air technology - G-series.
I also like Asics sporty casual tennies. Today I wore my Marc Jacobs rain boots with no problems :)
thanks for the love!
and yes.
I always suggest others find a good running store and get fitted for walking shoes (all the stores Ive been to have had people on staff who can fit walkers) as it will make the entire experience more enjoyable and youre more apt to stick with it!
xo xo,
Miz.
Great post. I always run..but recently have to walk a little more due to my dsic bulge. I agree with Jody get a new walking sneaker. You will be glad you did.
I went to a running shoe store where they had me step on some sort of gizmo that showed them what type foot and stride I had. Then they were able to steer me to a certain group of shoes. I tried several styles on and walked in them and let them watch me walk in them to look for signs of trouble. Finally, I decided the Asics were working best. I *love* them. (They hug my feet!) Since then, I've tried a pair of Brooks, which I *like* but don't love.
I use a different shoe for indoor exercise than outdoor exercise. My podiatrist recommended it because of the different wear patterns over time. Also, the indoor shoes will last a long, long time.
I'd love to see pics of the winning shoe!
