In hard times people turn to...

exercise and healthy eating to feel better about themselves. Nope, tootsie rolls! Really? According to this piece in the NYT they do.
The recession seems to have a sweet tooth. As unemployment has risen and 401(k)’s have shrunk, Americans, particularly adults, have been consuming growing volumes of candy, from Mary Janes and Tootsie Rolls to Gummy Bears and cheap chocolates, say candy makers, store owners and industry experts.

Theories vary on exactly why. For many, sugar lifts spirits dragged low by the languishing economy. For others, candy also provides a nostalgic reminder of better times. And not insignificantly, it is relatively cheap.
I don't even know what "Mary Janes" are. On my town's historic little Main Street, the bookstore is for sale and some restaurants have recently gone out of business. However, there is a new bakery, cake shop, and ice cream parlor (also sells candy). The existing candy shop seems to be doing well (noticed a new security door on its entrance the other day - someone robbed the candy store?).

Personally, I don't get this. There is not enough sugar on Main Street to make me feel better about the problems facing our country at this time, especially my concerns and worries about the tanking economy. I used to think we have an adolescent culture but perhaps we're more spoiled brat than anything else.

Eating sugar would only zone you out like a shot of tequila might. It's all temporary.

I'm sort of in N.Calif. I want to know where you are. Especially if Main Street has a candy shop.

I live in one of those historic gold rush towns/cities near Tahoe.

I thought Mary Janes were shoes.

I also heard the other day that taverns and bars are doing a bang up business due to the poor economy. Pick your poison, I guess...candy is dandy but liquor is quicker.

yeah, stress will do it to ya. I like your first line better. In stressful times turn to exercise and eating right. In the ned, you feel better. Maybe not while you are doing it :)
