Can we talk - about snacks?

Who knew that snacking can actually help in losing weight -- if you choose the right kinds and amount of snacks that is. It's hard to know what exactly has helped with boosting my sluggish metabolism because I try to do everything possible from drinking green tea to eating spicy foods. However, I have a hunch that snacking every couple hours has helped. Snacking also helps mentally because I tell myself that I can eat whenever I feel hungry. No deprivation here!

Here are 4 Snacks for Weight Loss from Dr. Weil:
  1. Fresh or lightly steamed veggies
  2. Whole wheat pita and hummus (Don't know why, but I tend to overeat this snack)
  3. Seasonal fruit with low-fat yogurt and freshly ground flaxseed
  4. Whole grain crackers with a small piece of cheese or some smoked salmon
Here are my favorite 4 Snacks:
  1. An organic apple with natural peanut butter
  2. Nonfat plain Greek yogurt with fresh fruit
  3. One or two prunes with a handful (about six) roasted & reduced salt almonds
  4. A small pomegranate flavored nonfat Greek yogurt (Trader Joe's) with hamster pellets (Fiber One cereal)
What are your favorite healthy - weight loss snacks?

Hey Lee, like you, I love non-fat Greek yogurt, I love raw almonds (portion controlled of course), I have my choice of whole grain breads (toasted & dry), I have a couple protein bars I like & sometimes I may have a half of that for a snack, love apples too! I guess we are on a similar wavelength!

I forgot low sodium V-8 alone or with six almonds or string cheese.

Jody - Yes, we do seem to have similar preferences in a lot of things. BTW - I love Hawaii too. The banner photo is of California poppies.

String cheese, Ryvita cracker, almonds, (am eating some watermelon right now between keystrokes (messy keyboard). Apples. Nothing. Water.

My deluxe treat/snack is Ezekiel bread panini with peanut butter and banana. I only eat this occasionally because it tastes like cake... as long as you've been dieting a long time.

I like an apple and a little peanut butter, or a banana, love nuts, but hard to stop. I definitely should eat more snacks, and smaller meals. I am justa little afraid of the additional opportunities to indulge in too many calories!

I have a question for you guys about the Greek Yogurt. I don't eat it as a snack, but only use it sparingly in recipes, such as salad dressing. That is because I resist buying the nonfat. My impression of nonfat anything is that, in general, they replace the fat with sugar. Is this the case with the greek yogurt? and if so, is it a concern for you, or just the lesser of two evils?

I hardly ever snack. But grape tomatoes make a delicious healthy snack. Pickles are also tasty and very low in calories. And strawberries!

I just ate one of those Skinny Cow ice cream thingies. Mmmm.

Ooh, I like your snacks much better than the fresh or lightly steamed vegetable idea.

Sorry, that's just not the least bit appealing as a snack! Maybe as a side at dinner.

POD - I just tried Ryvita crackers. Superb hummus delivery tool I must say. I think will treat myself to your deluxe treat/snack when I finally get into the 130's. It sounds so good.

Patty - I'm trying to watch how much animal fat I consume so I've recently changed to nonfat yogurt and organic nonfat milk. I don't eat beef or pork. I don't count calories...but I do pay attention to them. The TJ's pomegranate yogurt has more sugar than I usually have (which is none) but it's an every now & then indulgence. The hamster pellets assuage my guilt.

sara - Oh, gosh, it's been ages since I've had a skinny cow. Dang those are good. Maybe once I'm in maintenance. Because of your mention of grape tomatoes, I threw some on my eggs (scrambled with fresh basil) this morning. Yum.

Miz - Trailmix! But I have to measure it out - no self-control.

Crabby - I thought the same thing. Who snacks on steamed broccoli? I don't know...

great post Lee. Me, being quite the snacker, I love the greek yogurt and rice cakes with pb. I also love fresh fruits and trying to get better on the veggies.

POD - Yep, I'm over-the-top obsessed with reaching my goal now. It feels like I imagine it would feel if I were at mile 24 in a marathon. I just have to keep so focused. Just be glad you don't have to live with me.
